a young gun’s signature hat style

Rickie Fowler, the Next Great Thing in U.S.DC Hats Golf — until the next Next comes along — is making his Masters debut at the tender age of 22, and that alone should disqualify him from winning.

Nobody except Fuzzy Zoeller has won in his maiden voyage over this uniquely demanding golf course and Fuzzy did that in 1979. (Horton Smith in 1934 and Gene Sarazen in 1935 don’t really count because the toona-mint was brand new and everybody was a virgin, as it were.)

History aside, it would surprise no one if Fowler, or one of three or four others among the rookie class of 20 this time, jumped up and won; the next wave to crash on big-time golf’s shore is indeed that talented.

Fowler, whose trademark appearance usually begins with pylon-orange outfits, likes enormous flat-brimmed hats that, in shape, resemble those things your grandmother used to knit to put over tea kettles. He wears them with a fashionable sideways tilt and, upon arrival for his press palaver Monday, he went through an elaborate exercise in turning it backward, fixing his hair just so.

One of the members harrumphed,NFL Hats then more than harrumphed and the hat was turned the way that God, possibly, intended hats to be worn.
